Joy is a Choice

Joy is not a feeling; it is a decision. We become joyful by having someone or something respond to us in a positive way. Joy can only be created in relationship with another person, animal, or object.  Joy is a spiritual value which can only be tapped into when we are connected to the source. Joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit.  Joy is more than happiness.  Joy comes from inner contentment and delight.  It is an attitude which we can influence with our mind.  It is not dependent on external circumstances or a time frame.  We experience the greatest joy when we have our own children who resemble us.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
~ Galatians 5:22-23

From an energy point of view, joy is one of the highest frequencies.  In his book Power Vs. Force  David Hawkins (1913-2012) declares only peace and enlightenment as higher vibrations.

“We change the world not by what we say or do, but as a consequence of what we have become.”
~ David R. Hawkins

In the Divine Principle we learn:
“Let us first examine how joy is produced. Joy is not created by the individual alone. Joy comes when we have an object, whether invisible or visible, in which our own character and form are reflected and developed, thus enabling us to feel our own character and form through the stimulation derived from the object.

For example, man feels joy as a creator only when he has an object; that is, when he sees the product of his work, whether it be a painting or sculpture, in which his plan is substantiated. In this way, he is able to feel his own character and form objectively through the stimulation derived from the product of his work. When the idea itself remains in the objective position the stimulation derived from it is not substantial; therefore, the joy derived from it cannot be substantial either. God's joy is produced in the same manner as man's. Therefore, God feels joy when He feels His original character and form objectively through the stimulation derived from His substantial object.”
~ Divine Principle – Purpose of Creation – Sect. 3:2

How does all of this apply to our everyday life?
Joy, being our purpose, becomes a very desirable experience.  I find myself most joyful when I am grateful, content, compassioned and forgiving.  When I am in that state of mind I can easily relate to others, and the activities of the day flow in harmony.  It doesn’t bother me when my granddaughter throws a fit because she wants a cookie before lunch, the car in front of me pulls in my parking lot or that my husband has a different idea on what to eat for dinner.  I can tolerate my environment better, relate to my fellow man and every tasks gives me fulfillment.  I don’t need a certain response in order to be happy because I have the joy inside me, the higher frequency can absorb all kinds of lower vibes.

If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”
~ Nikola Tesla

How do we plug into this joy?
Be aware of your feelings, watch for negative repetitive emotions; transform them into great experiences
Be compassionate
Be creative: bake a cake, paint a picture, or sing a song
Be grateful
Be honest with yourself; live authentic with integrity
Be in awe, appreciate nature
Be inspired (read scriptures, pray, meditate)
Be joyful, laugh, be silly, have fun
Be open to new ideas, possibilities
Be patient, be silent; the answer will come

“Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death they would be asked two questions and their answers would determine whether they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was, 'Did you bring joy?' The second was, 'Did you find joy?”
~ Leo Buscaglia

Create awareness, be mindful; pay attention to the present moment
Create belonging (family, friends, and community) be around people who love and respect each other
Create peace and calm for yourself
Create purpose and meaning for your life
Do things you love
Don’t criticize or judge
Face fears, avoid stress
Follow a dream, ideal: live your values

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
~ Psalm 118:24

Get rid of old belief systems, check your core beliefs
Have positive attitude, be a good-finder
Imaging beautiful things
Let go of hurts and pain, don’t hold grudges; after the darkness there is always light
Listen to harmonious music
Listen to other’s stories, be understanding
Reach out, be kind to others

Because joy is so crucial to a happy life, some people have created the The Joy Project.
Amanda Gore, founder of the Joy Project sees joy as an iceberg - the largest part of the iceberg is the foundation on which joy is built - the tip is what you see!  The website gives many ideas on how to create joy and participate with others in the creation of it.

I am sure there are many more ways to create joy and add them to the above list.  I believe a key to finding joy in one’s life is to connect directly to the source of joy which is in God, the creator of it all.  Let’s spread the joy!

Blessings

Blessings come in so many different ways.  Among the most cherished are children.  I am sure those dads who celebrated Father’s Day yesterday will agree with me that children are the greatest miracle of all.

Blessings are among many of God’s favors and protection.  But we humans can also give our blessings to others through prayer and benedictions.

Since God gave the original blessing to Abram (Genesis 12:1-2), the three major religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam have a common beginning.

“And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
~ Genesis 1:28

Giving each other blessings helps us to feel good.  Being kind and serving each other, gives positive feedback to our body.  Through that kind of mind/body unity we create a base for God to sanctify us.  In the Divine Principle (3.1) we call that the first blessing or being fruitful.

The achievement of the first blessing is very crucial because it becomes the foundation for all the second and third blessing.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
~ Galatians 5:22-23

As this bible quote suggests, there are the fruits of the spirit which we are to emulate.  Once we have incorporated these values mind-body unity becomes much easier.

Through the second blessing we experience the love between man and woman.  Husband and wife create a family by having children.  Each blessing helps us to grow more and contributes to our maturity.

As experienced adults we can fulfill the third blessing by taking care of the natural world and reap all the benefits from the creation.

When we look upon our world today, we can certainly find problems everywhere.  Unfortunately, we are trying to find solutions in an external way.  Looking at the diagram above, we can see that the trouble lies in the first blessing.  To become fruitful means to be mature, responsible and caring to oneself, to others and to the environment.  For most of us to love ourselves is the hardest thing of all.

There is a book out called “The Gentle Art of Blessing” which talks about the health benefits of blessings.  Blessings even have a positive effect on our DNA.  Since we are all spiritual (energy) beings, we respond well to positive vibrations.  Blessings are the ultimate benevolence.  They infuse us with holiness and remind us of our true original potential.

I am closing this blog with blessings to all who come by to read it.  Bless yourselves and others and you will never be the same.

Danger of Perfectionism

There is a common saying that nobody is perfect, yet that does not keep some of us from trying.  In general, there is nothing wrong with doing our best and excelling, even competing with others for the first spot.

Many Christians try to follow Jesus and his words from the “Sermon on the Mount:”

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
~ Matthew 5:48

What is the meaning of this perfection which Jesus suggested?

·       According to the dictionary, perfection means: the condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all flaws or defects.

·       The word "perfection" derives from the Latin "perfectio", and "perfect" — from "perfectus." These expressions in turn come from "perficio" — "to finish", "to bring to an end."

·       The philosopher Aristotle defines perfection as:

1. which is complete — which contains all the requisite parts;
2. which is so good that nothing of the kind could be better;
3. which has attained its purpose.

Once we understand what our human purpose (human beings are created to be the center of harmony of the whole cosmos) is, I don’t see it as an impossibility of reaching that perfect state.

“Ring the bells that still can ring
 Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack in everything,
That's how the light gets in.”
~Leonard Cohen, Canadian musician, poet and novelist

Today, more than ever before, we have learned about spiritual principles like The Law of Attraction.  We understand that it has the same or even greater consequences than physical laws such as the Law of Gravity.

God gave us spiritual laws to direct us on our journey here on earth so that we have some guidelines for our lives.  Traditionally, religions were the source of these principles, since they dealt with spiritual matters.  Unfortunately, there are so many religions and so many different ways to present these principles that people often get confused, and in the worst way, throw out all of these instructions.

“Many people think of perfectionism as striving to be your best, but it is not about self-improvement; it's about earning approval and acceptance.”
~ Brene Brown, American scholar, author, public speaker on vulnerability.

There is a trend toward perfectionism though which is downright unhealthy and causes mental illness.

Extreme perfectionism:

·       Causes anxiety

·       Causes worry

      ·       Causes arrogance

·       Shuts out emotions

·       Creates unrealistic expectations

·       Creates paralysis by analysis

·       Avoids suffering

·       Tries to keep control

·       Tries to do everything by oneself without help from others

I am sure we could add many more symptoms of extreme perfectionism which can be dangerous for lives.

"Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
~ Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry, 1900-1944  French writer and aviator

I was reading a book In Pursuit of Perfect by Tal Ben-Shahar who uses his observations to shed more light on reaching happiness instead of perfection.  Tal is an optimistic force in bringing positive psychology to the general public.  Positive psychology focuses on happiness, self-esteem, optimism, and joy.  Among Mr. Ben-Shahar’s attention I like the one on being grateful the most.  Gratitude creates a base for happiness and opens a passage to communicate with the Divine, our Heavenly Parents.

How to Conquer the "Triangle of Death?"

You may have heard of the Bermuda “triangle of death,” where people have vanished in the Atlantic Ocean, think that I am referring to warfare, or have been aware of certain climbing techniques but what I am talking about here is right with us: in the middle of our face; the triangle between our eyes, nose and mouth.

I was reading an article by Doctor Craig Maxwell, who explained about the dangers which can lurk in this area because of human touch, and the fact that the area is moist, dark and connected to the brain (through the nose and the sinuses.)

Even Doctor Mehmet Oz talked about it one day on his show where he warned us not to touch our nose with bare fingers because bacteria can enter into the sinus cavities by picking it, squeeze a pimple or just scratch it with the nail.

Dr. Martin Spiller goes one step further to clarify the ‘dangerous triangle’ as the door to the brain and the dangers of Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis (formation of blood clots).

There are several ways to avoid spreading bacteria in the face.  The obvious is not to touch.  But what to do when the nose is clogged or stuffy?  Dr. Ben Kim advises to rinse the nose every night before going to bed.

Some people irrigate the nose with a Neti pot  which is an old Ayurvedic tradition.  Ayurvedic medicine also has the custom of oil pulling.

Dr. Bruce Fife promotes coconut oil for a variety of applications.  In his newest book, Oil Pulling Therapy: Detoxifying and Healing the Body Through Oral Cleansing he suggests to use coconut for oil pulling and to smear the oil into the nostrils to prevent crusting of the nostrils.

I wrote once before about oil pulling.  But since I learned about the advantages of coconut oil, I now submit to using it, instead of sesame oil.

Benefits of Oil pulling:

It whitens teeth.  Coconut oil possesses natural antibiotic and anti-viral properties that brighten dull or yellowed teeth and enhance the cleansing action of oil pulling, according to Dr. Bruce Fife. It also improves gum health, eliminates bad breath and makes for a prettier smile.

It clears up acne. The detoxifying effect oil pulling has on the body can also reduce the appearance of skin rashes and other blemishes. "Removing bacteria and toxins from the body eliminates a great deal of stress that results in improved energy levels," said Dr. Fife. And we all know how stress can lead to embarrassing skin problems.

It can lead to a healthy, glowing complexion. Because oil pulling involves "pulling" germs and toxins in the mouth that often leak into the bloodstream, affecting the entire body, Dr. Fife believes that it can improve skin health and appearance. But don't be misled by random myths that the oil activates some unknown enzymes in the mouth that magically detox the body. The health benefits of coconut oil coupled with the cleansing action will have your skin glowing from the inside out.

Dr. Bruce Fife

I hope I gave you some ideas on how to triumph over the “triangle of death.”  We all want to empower ourselves and learning health secrets can be very energizing and most of all: saving money.

O - O - Olives

When I visited my brother this past spring in Southern Spain, I got a taste of Spanish Olives.  The ones he served as tapas (appetizers) were stuffed with anchovies, oh - so delicious. The Spaniards eat them along with chorizo, a type of pork sausage or little sandwiches.  I also came to like the ones stuffed with garlic or pimientos.

Olive plantations Southern Spain
The first time I flew into Malaga, Spain, I was greeted by the olive plantations.  They looked like lush green balls, all lined up in rows, covering hill after hill.  After I tasted olives and really liked them, I did some research after coming back home, and discovered that we can buy most of them also here in America.

Here are my findings about olives:

The olive is a fruit from the  Olea europaea tree of the Oleaceae family.  In the middle of the fruit is one pit or stone.  Lilac, jasmine and forsythia are in the same plant family.  Some trees can become hundreds or even thousands of years old and still bear fruits.  The fruit is harvested in different stages as green, purple to black.  To fasten the process, commercial black olives are often treated with ferrous sulfate to achieve the black color.

Olives are grown for the oil, but the fruit also has its health benefits.

HealthBenefits of Olives

Olives contain polyphenols which have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.  The fat content of olive’s monounsaturated fat (MUFA) can benefit lowering of high blood pressure and a healthy heart. MUFA is the healthy kind of fat compared to saturated fats and trans-fats. Olives can also help relieve pain because of oleocanthal, an anti-inflammatory compound and benefit stomach ulcers by eliminating certain bacteria. For those who are low in iron olives can raise iron count. It also contains fare amounts of copper and Vitamin E.

While the oil of the fruit is 100% fat, the fruits usually only contain about 20% fat.

Since olives from the tree are bitter, they are cured in different methods, either water-cured, brine cured (salt water - some fermentation occurs in the process), or lye cured. The curing process adds flavor to the olives.

Interesting fact about olive trees

There are some trees in the Garden of Gethsemane (which is the Hebrew word for "gat shemanim" or olive press) which are dated back to the time of Jesus, 2000 years ago.

For thousands of years the olive branch has been used as a sign of peace and goodwill. This may be partly due to the fact that in early cultivation of the olive, it took decades to bear fruit for harvest, and, therefore, it was believed that anyone who planted olive groves was expecting a long and peaceful life. The symbolism is also likely related to the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark and the dove.

Olive oil has been used to light lamps, to create heat, is used as food, medicine and perfume.  In religious traditions the oil is used to anoint and bless people.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in olive oil and the fruits.

Spain has the highest olive production in the world. The largest olive is called “dunkey olive” and the smallest is called “bullet olive.”

The most popular olives are the Kalamata olives from Kalamata, Greece.

15 olives can count as your daily serving of fruits.

Christopher Columbus brought olive oil to America, but the trees were not introduced until later.

Go and try some olives and get to love them.

Have You Gone Barefoot Today?

I like to walk barefoot in the morning, even walking out into the yard, on the wet grass.  It feels so refreshing and invigorating.  Just recently I learned that there are now therapies called, 'earthing' or grounding to benefit our health.

It seems so natural to walk in your bare feet, but our modern-day lifestyle keeps most people indoors, with shoes or at least socks on their feet.

Since I did some research on the subject, I discovered that there is even scientific validation on walking barefoot.  Free electrons are transferred from the earth into your body, and this grounding effect is one of the most powerful antioxidants we know of.  Dr. Joseph Mercola reports that inflammation thrives when your blood is thick, and you have a lot of free radical stress, and a lot of positive charges in your body.  Grounding effectively alleviates inflammation because it thins your blood and infuses you with negatively charged ions through the soles of your feet.

Surfaces that allow for proper grounding include sand, grass, bare dirt, and untreated concrete, brick and ceramic tile.  Leather-soled shoes also allow you to ground while walking, whereas rubber-soled shoes disconnect you from the earth and block beneficial electron transfer.

Grounding helps thin your blood by improving its zeta potential, which means it improves the energy between your red blood cells.  Research has demonstrated it takes about 80 minutes for the free electrons from the earth to reach your blood stream and transform your blood.

Grounding is contraindicated if you take Coumadin, as it may thin your blood too much.

There are some other authorities reporting on the benefits of “grounding:” Some say, that the benefit can be felt in as little as 15 minutes a day.

There are several books on the market revealing the benefits of barefoot walking.

Here are a few benefits of going without shoes and connecting with the earth:

- Anti-aging

- Sound sleep

- Heightened clarity

- A calm nervous system

- Accelerated healing from injuries

- Cardiovascular health

- Enhanced immune system

- Reduced PMS symptoms

- Increased energy

- Reduction in inflammation

- Elimination of jet lag

- Protection against electromagnetic fields (EMFs)

There are even throngs and mats produced to help get grounded when we don’t have access to grass or a beach.

Naturally, the best way is also the least expensive way: just take off your shoes and socks and walk barefoot,  you will feel refreshed and energized.

The Benefits of Vitamin D – the Sunshine Vitamin

With the beginning of spring, I realized how much I craved sunshine.  I like to work in my garden in the early spring when it’s not so hot yet outside.  Temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit work best for me.

During the winter months I followed my doctor’s advice and take 5,000 mg of Vitamin D3 in pill form.  Obviously the exposure to natural sunlight (avoiding the mid-day hours) is the best, but our climate here in Ohio does not allow too much outdoor activities during the colder months.

What is Vitamin D good for?

Most importantly it promotes calcium absorption in the intestines which is crucial for bone building.

Vitamin is also significant for the immune system and prevents colds and flu during the colder seasons.

It is also crucial in preventing inflammation in the body.

Vitamin D is essential in preventing cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness, and even cancer. Another critical factor for enjoying natural sunshine is that it enhances our moods.   When I step out into my yard when the sun shines, I feel immediately uplifted and happy.  Low levels of Vitamin D can cause depression, fatigue, and mood swings.  Sufficient levels of Vitamin D increase Serotonin

Unfortunately, there are very few foods which contain Vitamin D.  When I was a child my mother made us take Codliver Oil during the winter.  Today, milk is enhanced with Vitamin D as are some other foods.

As we are starting the warmer season, the best bet is to get outdoors and enjoy both sunshine and fresh air.

Oh, What an Eye-Opener

With the spring season just around the bend, I always feel inspired to do some body ‘spring cleaning.’  This time I wanted to focus on my eyes since I often have blurred vision due to upper respiratory congestion.  I was wondering which internal organ correlates to the eyes?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) liver blood deficiency can cause problems such as blurry vision and other vision problems, short-sightedness (myopia), dry eyes or floaters in the eyes. Excess liver heat can cause painful, burning and bloodshot eyes.  TCM has a clear description of emotional connections when the liver is imbalanced.  Anger, frustration and resentment have a correlation to the health of the liver.

“The liver opens into the eyes. When the liver is harmonized, the eyes can distinguish the five colors.”
~ Chinese wisdom

According to Western medicine it is the function of the liver to act as the body’s filter.  It cleans toxins, breaks down fats, converts glucose (sugar) to glycogen, metabolizes carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals, and produces cholesterol; in other words it is one important organ.

Therefore, I decided to help out my liver and give it some extra attention.  I could buy pills or cleansing kits, but something told me that food would be the better liver support.

Since I love fresh vegetable juices, I decided to buy some apples, beets, carrots, celery, cucumbers, ginger root, kale, parsley, and pears (best are organic fruits and vegetables).   I don’t have a specific recipe but to make two glasses of fresh juice you need quite a bit.  You always want to give one glass to your honey, since he probably would not go through the trouble of cleaning the produce and juicing it.

Health Benefits of Beets

I learned that beets are particularly beneficial for liver support.  Beets contain many B vitamins, including folate, beta-carotene, calcium, iron, magnesium, and fiber.  Beet juice is also favorable because it allows the betaine to stay intact.  It is the betaine which gives the liver the power to get rid of the toxins and acts as a bile thinner.

Beet juice

Fresh beet juice can be highly beneficial, as it allows the betaine to stay intact. Betaine is the substance that encourages the liver cells to get rid of toxins. Additionally, betaine acts to defend the liver and bile ducts, which are important if the liver is to function properly. This particular substance is also said by some to decrease the risk of coronary and cerebral artery diseases, as it lowers inflammation in the body, allowing the many systems to work without interruption.  Jay Kordich, the juice man, suggests to start with 2-4 ounces of beet juice and then increase slowly over a few weeks.  Always mix your beet juice with other vegetables, since it has very strong taste.

Cooked Beets

Just in time to support my research on beets, I received Dr. Ben Kim’s newsletter.  He describes how we can use cooked beets for our health.

Pickled Beets

Once you have cooked the beets, removing the skin is very easy.  Cut the bulb into bite-size pieces.  Add some chopped onions, olive oil, vinegar and salt and pepper to taste; store in the refrigerator in a covered glass.  Yum….

Do You Know about GM Foods?

Recently, it came to my attention that not all foods are real foods.  I have always tried to avoid prepared foods as much as possible and used mostly fresh or at least start with single foods.  Now I am learning that some of our foods are genetically altered.  This alteration takes place not in the factories where the workers prepare the foods but rather in chemical labs like Monsanto where the seeds are injected with herbicides and pesticides like round-up in order to grow with greater pest-resistance.

Why are Foods genetically Modified?

The original motivation for developing genetically modified organisms (GMO) was to protect the crops.  Now, they are produced to resist against plant diseases which are caused by insects or viruses or through increased tolerance toward herbicides.  We are also told that this kind of treatment increases the crop yield.

List of GMO foods:

What do genetically Modified Foods do to Our Health?

At this point, we don’t really know, since most of the studies have been done on animals.  Is it by coincidence that since some thirty years (the genetic alternated crops have been marketed since 1990s.) we have an increase of allergies, inflammation and other organ malfunction in the general population?

Here are some links to help us understand more about the subject:

What can we do to avoid genetically Modified Foods?

I am not a farmer or a scientist, just a mother and grandmother who is concerned about the general well-being of my family.  I don’t want to feed my kids foods which can hurt my family and especially future generations.  At this point we need to educate ourselves.  I watched a movie which really scared me regarding these alternated foods: Genetic Roulette.

Other links about GMOs

How do we recognize GMO (genetically modified organisms)?

Again, we have to educate ourselves about GMOs.  I have found several lists of brand-name products which incorporate GMO derived foods:

List of GMO foods:

Nature or man-made?

Traditionally, farmers collected seeds from season to season, saving seeds from the fall harvest and replant them again in the spring.  Since Monsanto has reinvented themselves from a pesticide and herbicide producer to a multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation farmers are often forced to buy Monsanto's seeds.  They patented their seed production, which are only grown to be planted for one season.  The hybrid seeds cannot be replanted the next spring.

Here is another link to Monsanto’s business practices:

1. GMOs are needed to feed the world.
2. GMOs have been thoroughly tested and proven safe.
3. GMOs increase yield.
4. GMOs reduce the use of agricultural chemicals.
5. GMOs can be contained, and therefore coexist with non-GM crops.

Here is a list of companies which sell organic seeds:

Here is a link to a video regarding harvesting healthy seeds. http://geneticroulettemovie.com/seeds-of-freedom/

While I was finishing the research about this blog I came across an article that certain countries like Russia suspend the purchase of buying GMO seeds.

In the end we all have to make our own choices of what we want to eat and how we want to live our lives.  What I don’t like is when we are forced to be limited to only one choice; that sounds to me like the rules my parents escaped from when they left East-Germany in 1961.
